Piotr Michałowski (1800 - 1855) Piotr Michałowski was one of the most exceptional painters of the polish romanticism period and his work is widely recognized around the world. Michalowski was multi-talented. In the years 1815-1821 he studied Environmental Studies, Law, History and Languages at the Jagiellonian University and in Getynga. At the same time, since childhood, he studied drawing at workshops of M. Stachowicz, J. Brodowski and F. Lampi. He worked for the Polish Kingdom administration. Michałowski spent the 1832-1835 in Paris where he studied in N.-T. Charlet’s workshop. He was an excellent painter of horses. His paintings and watercolours were very popular, it was said that the whole of Paris is “running after his horses”. After his return to Poland he mainly administrated his mansions in Krzyżtoporzye and Bolestraszyce. Michałowski traveled a lot, visiting such places as London, Vienna, Karlsbaud, Belgium, Holland and France several times. In the years 1848-53 he was president of the Krakow Administration Council. He painted dynamic battle compositions, family and friends’ portraits, as well as portraits of leaders on horses and of peasants.
